NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming)
One of the focuses in NLP therapy is just to work in the present, and to bring your skills and resources into present situations where you feel disempowered. This emphasis on what state you are in – how you feel when you are functioning well – is a more modern trend in NLP. The aim and focus here is to help clients access these resource states and attach them to contexts where they are blocked from acting as they would want.
NLP and language
Some of the original NLP intervention patterns dealt with language, and can powerfully lever us out of some of the limitations imposed by the language in which we frame thoughts. If you say for example “I wish I hadn’t made that decision” you have made a noun “decision” out of the verb “to decide”. Nouns are static, fixed things, whereas verbs describe movement ie change. When you think of “redeciding”, doors can open as the possibility of change and movement has come into your thinking, which was not there before. This can really help with decision making and when procrastination is a problem.
Public speaking
If you feel nervous when having to speak at meetings or give presentations, there will be unrelated times in your life when you feel confident and unselfconscious, e.g. when you are doing well at sport or have prepared a meal that people complement you on, or simply enjoyed a happy, carefree evening with a old friend. These powerful resource states of yours can be attached to the meeting context so you can handle the meeting/presentation in a confident and capable manner.
Spelling
A lot of children and adults have problems with spelling, and in a school or work environment this can detract from the whole presentation of an essay, letter, business document etc. and way it is received and judged. Problems in spelling, not dyslexia, come from trying to sound out the words. English is not phonetic and you have to learn how to make permanent pictures of the shapes of words and read these off. This is quite easy and fun to learn, and can be taught in one session.
Goal achievment
People often fail at achieving their goals as they see the goal as an insurmountable task, and are therefore in a very overwhelmed and unresourceful state. The trick in helping clients to attain their goals is to find out how they will feel when they have achieved their goal and then WHILE in that state to consider the next smallest step towards attainment.
For example if someone wants to tidy up their home and finds this totally overwhelming to consider, I would ask them to consider how they’ll feel when it is all tidy, and as they experience that state, which is usually pretty good, to decide on the next smallest step towards the goal. This might be just to spend half an hour clearing a desk or some similarly do-able task so that they they move towards the goal comfortably over a period of time.
Worrying
Worry helps! Nothing I worry about ever happens! We worry in fast, usually high pitched internal dialogue. Helping clients to become aware of this and change the speed and pitch of the words helps the anxiety and credibility to go out of their internal chatter.
Lack of motivation and procrastination
People usually “lack motivation” because a part of them wants to achieve something and a part doesn’t want to: maybe it’s an exercise regime that you’ve decided on but always put off till next week, or you need to study something but shelve it and go out with friends instead (and then regret it afterwards). There is an excellent NLP technique called “Core Transformation” which deals with those parts of us that are blocking our progress. These parts are always aiming for beneficial ends, but what they are actually doing is directly interfering with the ultimate goals, and when these goals are clearly revealed these parts can be integrated and cease to stop us getting what we want.
